Elder Abuse Awareness Month: Protecting Seniors Through Advocacy and Support

Elder Abuse Awareness Month: Protecting Seniors Through Advocacy and Support

Every June, organizations across the nation observe Elder Abuse Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on a growing but often hidden issue. Elder abuse can take many forms—physical, emotional, financial, or neglect—and it affects millions of older adults each year.

At Community Home Health Care (CHHC), we believe every individual deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued. With over 30 years of serving seniors in Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana, we are committed to advocacy, protection, and compassionate care.

Elder abuse occurs when someone harms, exploits, or neglects an older adult. It can happen at home, in facilities, or even within trusted relationships.

Types of Elder Abuse

  • Physical abuse: Inflicting injury or pain
  • Emotional abuse: Intimidation, humiliation, or isolation
  • Financial exploitation: Misuse of funds, scams, or theft
  • Neglect: Failing to provide food, shelter, or medical care
  • Self-neglect: When seniors cannot meet their own needs due to health or cognitive decline

💡 Tip: Abuse is not always visible. Changes in mood, unexplained injuries, or sudden financial problems may signal something is wrong.

  • Unexplained bruises or injuries
  • Withdrawal from social activities or sudden isolation
  • Anxiety, fear, or unusual changes in behavior
  • Sudden financial changes or unpaid bills
  • Poor hygiene, malnutrition, or unsafe living conditions

If you notice these signs, it’s important to act quickly.

1. Stay Involved

Regular visits, phone calls, and check-ins show seniors they are supported and make it harder for abuse to go unnoticed.

2. Monitor Finances

Help older adults set up safeguards such as automatic bill pay, fraud alerts, or a trusted power of attorney.

3. Build a Support Team

Include healthcare providers, caregivers, and family members in care planning. Oversight reduces the risk of neglect or exploitation.

4. Encourage Open Communication

Let seniors know they can talk about concerns without judgment. Many older adults fear speaking up because they worry about losing independence.
